How to get your passport

Time to fly

A passport is an important travel document that allows you to travel internationally. If you don’t already have a passport, or if your passport has expired, here is how to get a new one:

  1. Determine if you need a passport: Most countries require a valid passport for entry, so if you’re planning an international trip, you’ll need to have a passport. Even if you’re not planning a trip, it’s a good idea to have a passport in case of emergency.
  2. Gather the necessary documents: To get a passport, you’ll need to provide proof of your identity and citizenship. This may include a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or other government-issued identification. You’ll also need to provide a recent photograph that meets the passport photo requirements.
  3. Fill out the application: You can fill out a passport application online or download a paper application and fill it out by hand. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and provide all the required information.
  4. Submit your application: Once you’ve completed your application, you’ll need to submit it in person at a passport acceptance facility. This may be a post office, library, or other government agency. You’ll need to bring your application, documents, and photograph with you, as well as pay the necessary fees.
  5. Wait for your passport: It typically takes 4-6 weeks to process a passport application.

Patience is a virtue, specifically when it comes to applying to a passport.
